Infinite Arms by Band of Horses

Calling this album a mix of roots and country and indie is too easy. I suppose if you put My Morning Jacket, Broken Bells, The Flaming Lips, The Black Keys, The National, and Neil Young in a giant paper bag and shook it up pretty good, Band of Horses might end up walking out of that bag. The vocals here keep the album going–and be sure to keep going. Zoning out is necessary, but even during its boring moments, this album is beautiful. And sensual. In fact, the title song might put you to sleep, but damn you’ll have good dreams. “Laredo,” might be all you need to pack a bag and take off…oh, and never return. I think the worst thing I could do, is get back home to you. There’s something about these songs that plants rebellion in the mind: they’re epic and dramatic; decision-making songs. Cut it off, confess love, buy a ticket, something giant. A man gets lonely, for heavens sake. It’s easy to relate to these narratives–we’ve heard them before–but not quite this way. They’re simple and crushing and full of fuel. They echo.
