Purple Rain by Prince (1984)

You own this: you know you do. And if, for some reason, you don’t still listen to it on a weekly basis, well, get it out, because frankly, it’s still the sexiest thing you own. Guaranteed. Sure, the movie was fairly lame, that doesn’t matter…it was 1984. The album remains colossal. Everyone deserves to feel this hot. Dangerously hot. Prince invented this level of heat. Thank you, Prince. Thank you for making life seem short and beautiful. This album puts it all right out there—there’s no time to be subtle. Let’s do go crazy: why the hell not? Let “Darling Nikki” rock your world every time. Breathe a little heavier. And then there’s the epic “Purple Rain” itself. It’s no accident that this has hints of gospel: it’s a religious experience. It’s time we all reach out for something new; that means you too. Or, in this case, something not so new: play this album loud and on repeat a few times through. Thank you, Prince: thank you, baby.
