Best Friends? by Brad

It’s been awhile since the release of Brad’s last album. Eight years, actually. A lot can happen in eight years. But these guys clearly can’t be rushed–and why would they be? They’ve got other things going on. Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, Pigeonhed’s Shawn Smith and Satchel’s Regan Hagar…are busy guys. This band that started out rough and jam-session-ish, is now polished and full of soul. Nothing is hurried here—proof that taking time with something often pays off pretty well. Most of the songs are just slightly longer than the boxed 3-4 minutes that many bands confine themselves to. The sound reflects a project done for the scrutiny of the process. Rocking and careful. Smith still pulls off the falsetto like he’s been studying Prince. But in a mellow, relaxing way. These guys have aged well, and their sound proves it. The songs are strung together in such a way that they almost seem like one song. And each song sort of leans on one member, with echoes of each person’s other respective band(s). “Bless Me Father,” towards the end of the album, sums up the ache in realizing that life is a process, a circle of being alone and being together.
