#9 Album of the year:
Jay Cullis:

Kanye West, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”

Just when you thought Kanye West had gone Tom Cruise Crazy and didn’t have anything left to say worth hearing, he goes and makes this record – a record created with the self-assurance needed to climb an insurmountable hill of expectation. It’s perfect in almost every way: from the lonely ping of a piano key to the laundry list of guests who shine without outshining the man of the hour.
Not that anything is brighter. Even the greatest rapper alive has all but seceded his throne. If this is the future of music I want a time machine.
Key Tracks: “Runaway,” “Monster,” and “So Appalled”

Micah Ling:
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, “I Learned the Hard Way”
If ever there were a sound definition of “timeless,” this would be it. This album may as well have come out in 1965, or 1975, or yesterday, played in your best friend’s vintage basement. It automatically makes you nostalgic. But it’s not hokey, it’s genuine. The way you feel when you see old photos of your parents: young and happy, without a fear in the world, without a notion of you. The way you feel when you remember the first time you suffered and moved on, the first time you loved and lost, but learned how to be a better version of yourself.
Key Tracks: “Better Things,” “I Learned the Hard Way,” and “The Game Gets Old.”

Stay tuned all week (and next!) Jay and Micah will count down their favorite albums of the year…
