Midnight Boom: The Kills

In Album on January 6, 2011 at 2:02 am

It’s a brand new year and this is not a brand new album, but goddamn, it’s a good way to start. Listening to The Kills…listening to this album, will make you cooler: promise. They’re quirky and danceable; they’re alternative and punk and absolute rock. This album is like a crazy, shiny, one-of-a-kind car. Like a Subaru BRAT. Super cool: you just want to get in. Sexy like the girl at the hipster bar who refuses to buy into the trends, but Jesus she can wear those boots. I’m a penny in a diamond mine. Oh, we could be movers; we could be shakers. “Night Train” is a bonus track and sounds a little more like what The Kills used to be known for: hard, hot guitars. That sounds still works, really well, mainly because it’s matched with calmer, more varied sounds (“Goodnight Bad Morning,” and “Black Balloon.”) This album will remind you of The White Stripes, Peaches, xx, and LCD Soundsystem. You are fever, you are fever, you ain’t born typical. There’s nothing typical about this duo: that’s why the sound is so great. They make you feel like you’re part of the coolest club, and you are.
