The Head and the Heart by The Head and the Heart

This isn’t like discovering your new favorite sound, it is discovering your new favorite sound. It must be flattering and fun for bands that have really made it, when a new band has clear influences and similarities; but these guys just make those other bands seem like old news. Yeah, they do sound like the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons and Bright Eyes, but better. They’ve got a woman; and honestly, it makes all the difference. These songs make you want to sing along–everything here is raw and honest. Super sad, but also just healing. “Rivers and Roads,” makes you want to go back and fix all the pain, all of it. It makes you miss so many people. The words and the voices and the instruments all match the severity of a spring storm: one with lightning that you can feel. Purple and righteous, with grown-up claps of thunder. That drum might be all that’s keeping you alive. These songs are the things we live with–the way things change.
