180/365 (Live), OK Go

In Album on June 22, 2011 at 8:56 pm

The Live album, much like the Best Of or the Greatest Hits album, tends to be something to listen to on road trips, but not much of a feat in the scheme of a band’s career. OK Go makes a firm argument that there’s something more in this kind of album. Here, it’s a different genre. Like a poet dabbling pretty well in fiction. And this collection of concert pieces is kind of like a story. It’s kind of epic. It makes you appreciate the arc of the tour. We know what it’s like to go to a concert and walk away disappointed. These guys verify that they can hold their own. This is less “just” a live album, and more what MTV Unplugged did back in the day, what iTunes has started to do with their Live Sessions. Sure, you might know this band, the way you know your favorite actors, but this album is Inside the Actor’s Studio. Go to these places around the country: concert halls, outdoor venues, the subway—realize the energy that it takes to do this. Pump the hell out of these versions, because, god you’ll want to be there.
