Codes and Keys, Death Cab for Cutie

We need bold colors–a scene just caked with paint: brilliant paint. Life tends to be timid: colored pencils, watercolors at best; but this is decidedly brave. Dancing around the room brave–nonexistent inhibition–go ahead and be ten again. Not that this is silly, or, not entirely so. It just can’t let normalcy get in the way of things. Ben Gibbard is married to Zooey Deschanel now. Maybe that’s enough said. Everything seems a little stronger and a little brighter. Maybe we’re all always tourists to absolute happiness, but, why not enjoy the trip? Things here are positive, and until you have to leave this land of bliss, you might as well crank it up. This isn’t the soundtrack to life–it can’t possibly be–but it’s a pretty happy place marker: a thing to go back to when you’re feeling so good. This band is growing, and this album grows on you. It’s more keyboards and synthesized sound than guitar–everyone’s doing it. They’re not hiding anything–they’re doing the opposite: embracing. And they’re pulling it off. Stay young, go dancing–this seems to be a dare.
